Xbox Series S and Series X now have Dolby Vision support in gaming

Microsoft Xbox Series X and Series S have reportedly received Dolby Vision support for games. This will allow owners of the latest Xbox consoles to play several compatible games with a higher-quality image resolution than already offered.

Until now, the Xbox Series S and Series X had Dolby Vision support for streaming entertainment applications such as Netflix and Disney Plus, while HDR support for games has been limited to the HDR10 standard.

Microsoft and Dolby had announced ahead of the November 2020 release of Xbox Series X that games will receive Dolby Vision support in 2021. Microsoft initiated testing the feature with Xbox Insiders this spring.

This update makes Xbox Series S and Series X the only gaming consoles where games can be played in both Dolby Vision HDR as well as Dolby Atmos spatial sound, which has been offered since launch. Dolby Vision support will cover over 100 next-generation HDR gaming titles that will be optimized for Series X|S and are currently available or coming soon, as affirmed by Microsoft.

As per reports, the library of games will include almost all of the native HDR titles currently available that have been enhanced for Xbox Series X|S, such as ‘Gears 5,’ Psychonauts 2’, along with ‘Ori and the Will of the Wisps.’

The list of nine games of Xbox Series X on the Microsoft Store that will support both Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision includes:

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • Borderlands 3
  • F1 2021
  • Dirt 5
  • Gears 5
  • Metro Exodus
  • Immortals Fenyx Rising
  • Psychonauts 2
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator

Apart from these, the group also includes Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy game, which is slated to launch on October 26.

A Dolby spokesperson apparently stated that games supporting Dolby Vision are in development and that the company is accelerating its engagements with these studios to create a strong library of upcoming games that will be launched in Dolby Vision.
