Sony to shutter its PlayStation Store for PS3 and Vita consoles

Japanese multinational conglomerate, Sony Corporation, has revealed plans to officially shut its PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 from July 2nd as well as its Vita devices from August 27th.

Apparently, following the shutdowns, users would no longer be able to buy digital copies of games or DLC for the PS3 and Vita. Also, Sony would be eliminating the remaining purchase functionality for its PlayStation Portable (PSP) from July 2nd.

If reports are to be believed, the users would still be able to download and play their previously purchased games, videos, and media content. However, as per the current change, users will not be able to purchase digital games and videos for PS3, PS Vita, or PSP. Furthermore, the access to in-game purchases would also be shuttered once the stores are closed.

Sources have also confirmed that users will be able to procure cross-buy content after the closures and would be allowed to access the PS3 as well as the PS Vita and PSP versions of video games that comply with cross-buy support.

The news concerning the closures made numerous individuals fear that the move would restrict them from downloading games to their devices. However, the recent reports suggest that this is not the case, which means good news for users who still own a PS3, PSP, or Vita as they would be able to continue accessing their games.

The only thing that would change is that the users would not be able to purchase the new digital games as well as content unless the games are powered with cross-buy support.

For the uninitiated, Sony’s PS3 was originally introduced in November 2006 and a total of over 80 million units of the consoles were sold. While the Vita did not fare as per expectations as only close to 10 million units were sold in total, the PSP was more of a hit with over 80 million purchases during its 10-year lifetime.
