Google announces extension of Google News Showcase programme in India

Google, a multinational technology company, has recently announced the extension of its Google News Showcase programme in India.

The technology company has joined hands with 30 news publishers, including regional, national, and local news organizations. The Hindu Group, ANI, Indo Asian News Service (IANS), The Telegraph India, Punjab Kesari, Deccan Herald, Amar Ujala, Zee News, NDTV, India TV, ABP LIVE, Indian Express Group, and HT Digital Streams Ltd are some of its partner content publishers in the region.

The recent Google News Showcase programme has been built on the existing News Showcase deals signed with 700 news publications in above a dozen countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Japan, Italy, Australia, the UK, Canada, and Germany. In addition, Google is presently in talks with publishers based in other countries as well. The company will showcase content from the partner publishers in its dedicated News Showcase panels on Google Discover and News in both Hindi and English languages. It is further planning to add more languages over the coming days.

Moreover, the partnership will allow Google to pay participating news organizations to provide readers access to limited paywalled content. The technology company has reportedly cited that the feature will enable readers to access more publishers’ content and deepen readers’ relations with the publishers.

Apart from the recent News Showcase programme launch, Google is intending to expand its Google News Initiative efforts in the country. As a part of these expanded efforts, the technology firm is expected to train up to 50,000 journalists as well as journalism students. Moreover, it will include various programmes on using digital tools to identify fake news and information online.

Furthermore, the technology company has unveiled new programmes to ensure the financial stability of the small- and mid-sized publications under its GNI Digital Growth Programme.
